What Is a Bosun, Anyway?

"Boatswain." Merriam-Webster, n.d. Web. 20 Jan. 2016. (Other dictionaries note the variants bo'sun and bosun.) The tall ship Hawaiian Chieftain once had a bosun that some people called "JohnnyJ." When he told me that his name was actually John Johnson, I didn't believe him. Eventually, we got married, and I've gotten used to it. Mr. J., as he is often called, has held a variety of jobs since dropping "Bosun" as his official title, but somehow, he always comes back to bosunry.
